Place of Origin

The city of Mexico-Tenochtitlan. It has been hypothesized that the historical portion was added later in the region of Puebla.

Completion Date

A reference point is the period of 1562-1563 which is the ending chronology of the codex. The images appear to have been painted from 1554-1555 and the glosses until 1563.

Contents

This colonial codex contains three major sections containing a common theme. It is possible that the codex was solicited by the Spanish civil and religious authorities to better understand the history and religion of the Mexica-Tenochcas.

The first part of the codex depicts a count of various ceremonies related to the cempoalxihuitl with each period lasting a duration of twenty days.

Attached to each trecena is a picture of the teotl assigned to that period. In addition, each of the thirteen days of the trecena period have an attached fate with "i" representing indifferente, "b" representing bueno, and "m" representing malo. In addition, a patron is shown for each of the days.
